History

Rayan Environmental Solutions was founded in Moncton in 1989 as Rayan Investments Ltd. The company is the only glass processor in Atlantic Canada, having partnered with Alcool NB Liquor in 1992 (under the Beverage Containers Act) to manage all non-refillable, deposit-bearing empty alcoholic beverage containers returned through the various redemption centers around the province. Rayan has processed hundreds of millions of containers made out of glass, aluminum and plastic. While recycling is the company’s core business, it is also involved in the recycling of scrap steel and precious metals as well as operating our own fleet of trucks.

Because of its dedication to the environment and commitment to value-added innovation, Rayan has developed a unique process to clean, ground and classify powdered glass to serve the chemical filler market. These products are exported from New Brunswick to markets throughout North America and the Caribbean. Rayan is the only company in North America manufacturing this product from used glass.

At Rayan, our 90 employees contribute significantly to the economies of the Greater Moncton area and New Brunswick. They buy houses, rent apartments, buy vehicles, shop in our stores, pay taxes and do invaluable volunteer work in communities from Moncton to Sussex to Richibucto – and all points in between.

Timeline

1983
Founder Murray Cruickshank operates under the name M&J Cruickshank, specializing in trucking and transporting used glass from the U.S. to Canada for recycling.
1985
Due to the increase in contaminants in the U.S. glass and the fact that there was no glass-cleaning facility in Canada, transporting the used glass to Canada becomes prohibited.
1989
Rayan Investments Ltd. is incorporated with Murray starting his own glass plant.
1992
Rayan acquires Alcool NB Liquor’s beverage container transportation, recycling and management contract, which it continues to run successfully to this day.
2017
Rayan Investments rebrands to operate under Rayan Environmental Solutions, a name more in line with its day-to-day activities and future plans.
